Do you enjoy the mouth-watering flavours of wood-fired pizza? Do you like the idea of enjoying those flavours in the comfort of your own home?

Buying a pizza oven is a great way to make the most of your outdoor living space and add value to the property. The question is — how much does a pizza oven cost?

In this article, we discuss the costs of various outdoor pizza ovens, ranging from small steel units to full brick pizza ovens. We also compare the costs of a freestanding unit with a built-in pizza oven to help you make an informed decision for your outdoor entertaining area.

Pizza ovens are available in various sizes and styles, impacting the price. Depending on the quality of the materials used and the amount of assembly required, the costs can be anywhere from $600 to $7,000.

Portable pizza ovens

A small portable pizza oven is easy to move around your outdoor space and can even be relocated to a new home. You can also store your pizza oven when not in use, particularly during the wet and cold months. Whilst they are available for a lower upfront price, it is worth noting that portable pizza ovens are generally less durable.

For example, the Ooni pizza oven uses wood pellets and a small stainless steel compartment to superheat the pizza.

Pizza oven kits

A prefabricated pizza oven kit can be purchased in separate pieces — typically the chimney, oven dome, oven floor, and base. These kits require little building work and can usually be a DIY project. These kits generally cost around $2,300, plus freight.

DIY pizza ovens or brick pizza ovens

If you want to save money, you can build your pizza oven entirely from scratch. The most common option is to build a dome with bricks and concrete, requiring a lot of research and tutorials.

When planning your DIY pizza oven, you must incorporate insulation and a thermal layer to prevent the heat from escaping and ensure your pizza cooks properly. To achieve this, you will need to include an oven floor, dome, vent, and door.

You will need a lot of materials and tools, including fire bricks, sand, vermiculite or perlite, refractory mortar, refractory cement, and more. You’ll also need to source your decorative details, flue, and flue hat for the chimney.

Built-in pizza ovens vs freestanding pizza ovens

The best type of pizza oven depends on your backyard and lifestyle. The two main options include freestanding ovens and built-in ovens.

A freestanding pizza oven is flexible and convenient, allowing you to enjoy pizza wherever and whenever. Key benefits include easy transportation and storage, affordability, and low maintenance. However, they typically have a smaller cooking capacity.

Built-in pizza ovens are designed to be integrated into your outdoor kitchen, either set into a countertop or clad with brick or clay. Key benefits include durability, excellent heat retention, customisation, large cooking capacity, and a more permanent, integrated design. However, these ovens cannot be moved and can be more costly to install.

Pre-assembled pizza ovens

A pre-built pizza oven is assembled in the factory and delivered to your site as a complete oven. Installation is quick and easy, meaning you can light your fire and enjoy a wood-fired pizza straight away.
