How much does a fireplace firebox cost?

Behind an impressive outdoor fireplace should be a sturdy firebox - the inner structure holding the flames, ash, and embers, that creates a warm and inviting ambience and long-lasting memories in your outdoor living area. 

Generally, a firebox is constructed from a selection of durable fire-resistant materials that can withstand high temperatures. Examples of this include refractory materials, steel, or fire bricks. The purpose of a firebox is to ensure safety by effectively containing fire and preventing it from spreading to the surrounding area and to make sure the fireplace radiates the heat and draws well.

While there is variety in the materials that can be used to create a firebox, it’s our belief that some firebox materials are better than others. Some even have wider applications and benefits because of their materials. In this article, we’ll explore the different materials and their benefits before exploring the cost options for each.

What are the different types of fireboxes?

As mentioned there are two main types of fireboxes; steel fireboxes and firebrick fireboxes. Each has pros and cons, which we'll explore in more detail. 

Steel firebox

A steel firebox chambers the fire and is a separate element to the fireplace itself. Directly connected to the chimney they have the following benefits:

• Steel fireboxes are generally created with a baffle design that promotes heat efficiency and maximum draw capabilities.
• Steel can reflect and absorb heat very well making it an excellent material for heating a space.
• Design flexibility is key with a steel firebox as it can be inserted into any existing or new structure.
• Steel fireboxes are cost-effective as they are manufactured in a factory so it minimises on-site labour, as you have a set price for the firebox before you start.
• Simplicity is key with a steel firebox, with their set dimensions it's easier to plan their inclusion in a fireplace design.
• Steel fireboxes are highly durable and resistant to warping and cracking.

Some additional considerations for steel fireboxes include:

• Fireboxes can experience surface rust in certain areas, like on the back baffle where the flames lick against; however minor annual maintenance helps prevent this and keep the firebox in good condition. The advantage of steel firebox maintenance is that generally this can be done by the user, not necessarily a skilled professional.
• It's very important to make sure the firebox you choose has the correct thickness of steel. 6mm is recommended for rigidity. A 6mm firebox steel with annual maintenance will make a steel firebox option the longest-lasting option.
• Steel fireboxes are made to set dimensions, which means they are unsuited to designs with a custom size opening.

Firebrick firebox

Firebricks are a very popular option for self-built fireplaces as they are easy to purchase and install. Here are some additional benefits of firebrick fireboxes:

• Firebricks are known for their ability to absorb and retain heat. The bricks continue to radiate heat long after the fire has died down. This is beneficial for heat efficiency in indoor fireplaces.
• Firebricks are highly resistant to thermal stress without cracking or deteriorating.
• Created in a brick shape, it enables configuration in a number of patterns and designs within the firebox.

Alongside these benefits, there are some additional considerations when looking into a firebrick-based firebox.

• A firebrick firebox generally only has a straight back so a lot of heat is lost up the chimney. They don’t have the ability to create the baffles to radiate heat out like a steel firebox.
• While short term there is very minimal maintenance required, cracks will still appear in firebricks, resulting in the need for ongoing replacement. Firebrick fireboxes are unable to be maintained, to prevent the need for replacement down the track. Any maintenance or firebrick replacements will require a trade professional.
• Firebricks are very heavy structures limiting their application.
• Additional structural support is often required to support a firebrick firebox, which can increase the costs.

Heat transfer can commonly be an issue with firebricks. They’re designed to retain and not reflect heat as well as a steel firebox, so extra energy will be spent before the heat is felt.

What costs should you expect when purchasing a firebox?

Firebox costs

A firebox has a range of prices, with much of the cost depending on the size and dimensions of the fireplace itself. While a firebrick fireplace will have a sliding cost directly in line with the number of firebricks used, a steel firebox has a very fixed cost as these are generally produced to set dimensions.

To make cost comparisons easier we’ll use a standard-sized firebox of around 1200mm wide and 660mm high, with a depth of 500mm. We will only look at the cost of the firebox itself, and not delivery, chimneys, surrounds, or finishes. While the below figures look vastly different, it is important to read on to get an understanding of why this is and what can change these.

• Steel firebox - $9,995 including GST
• Firebrick firebox - $3,900

Installation and delivery of a steel firebox

A steel firebox comes pre-constructed and with set dimensions, making installation quick and easy as it simply slots in and requires securing. We deliver all our fireplaces, including fireboxes, to a local depot at no charge, from there customers will arrange a local Hiab service to lift and position the firebox. This can also often be done onsite by using a digger or manpower.

On average, a Hiab could approximately cost $180 per hour. If you're located within 30 minutes of the depot and the truck can get within 15-20 metrs of the desired location, you can expect the Hiab service to cost approximately $360.

Warranties and compliance

All outdoor fireplace options should comply with the necessary safety regulations, so ensure that your firebox has a warranty and meets the New Zealand building code and safety standards. Our fireplace options meet the above, with compliance costs included, and a 2-year warranty. 

Ongoing maintenance of a firebox

Ongoing maintenance can include expenses ranging from approximately $100 NZD to $300 NZD per year, covering annual inspection, cleaning, and servicing costs. If the user is doing this themselves, this will only cost them around $30 per year to cover the cost of touch-up firebox paint. Like any fireplace, a chimney sweep is recommended on a regular basis.

T1600 firebox 

At 16000mm wide the T1600 is our largest firebox and was created out of necessity when the Twin Peak launched to the market.

The luxurious twin flue firebox is constructed with the same 6mm steel material and double-skinned backplate. It also includes our mesh door, adding safety to any outdoor entertaining area, while improving the overall aesthetic when not in use. Our T1600 firebox costs approximately $12,995 NZD, an additional cost to upgrade the firebox to stainless steel costs $6,995 NZD. 

What’s the price difference between a firebox and a precast outdoor fireplace?

How much does a precast outdoor fireplace with a pre-installed firebox cost? The cost of an outdoor fireplace can range from $7,000 NZD to $50,000 NZD. This depends on the fireplace model you select and also the accessory customisations you choose, such as wood boxes, hearths, flue/chimney lengths, etc. All of our outdoor fireplaces include a firebox, meaning this option can be more cost-effective as you are purchasing a turn-key solution.
