Faraway Cove: A Coastal Escape
Set beneath a canopy of ancient pōhutukawa with sweeping views of the Cavalli Coast, Faraway Cove is a hidden luxury retreat that embodies simplicity, adventure, and refined design.
Created by globe-trotting duo Bridget and Topher of Expedition Earth, this secluded getaway sits just north of Kauri Cliffs Golf Course and borders untouched Department of Conservation land. With three private beaches and a backdrop of endless ocean, the couple have captured a sense of quiet luxury in one of New Zealand’s most beautiful locations.

The Build: A Tiny Home with a Big Vision
After journeying through 67 countries in their Jeep, affectionately named Gunther, Bridget and Topher returned home when the pandemic paused their travels. Inspired by the boutique retreats they’d visited around the world, they set out to design a small-scale sanctuary that reflected the lessons learned on the road, namely that less can truly be more.
Partnering with Isaac Lindesay of Makespace, the couple created Faraway Cove: a contemporary, 50m² concept cabin designed to embrace its natural surroundings. The structure blends modern architectural form with a rugged coastal palette, black cladding, timber details, and wide openings that seamlessly connect the indoors to the outdoors.
Living small meant every square metre had to serve a purpose. Extending the usable living space outdoors was key, and that’s where the addition of an outdoor fireplace transformed the layout into a true indoor-outdoor retreat.

The Feature: Twin Peak Outdoor Fireplace
When it came to choosing a fireplace, aesthetics and performance were non-negotiable.
“Because of the size of the cabins, we rely on an indoor/outdoor living configuration which means without an outdoor fireplace, almost a third of our living area would be redundant after sunset,” Bridget explains. “Even if you’re out of range of the fire’s heat, being able to see its flames is enough to warm the body. It must be a primal instinct—everyone loves our Twin Peak!”
After exploring every prefabricated option on the market, the couple nearly went down the custom design route before discovering the Trendz Twin Peak Fireplace. With its twin flues and substantial scale, it delivered the visual impact and craftsmanship they wanted—without the complexities of a bespoke build.
Despite the challenging coastal site, installation was surprisingly seamless. A skilled Hiab operator managed to manoeuvre the fireplace directly into place overlooking the Pacific, completing what has since become the heart of Faraway Cove’s outdoor living space.

A Perfect Fit for a Life Well-Lived
Now, whether it’s evenings spent entertaining under the stars or quiet moments shared fireside, the Twin Peak has become an anchor point in this minimalist retreat.
For Bridget and Topher, it’s the perfect balance of design, warmth, and atmosphere — a reflection of the adventures that shaped them, now grounded in their own slice of paradise.
